Giving New Life to Dead Lithium-ion Batteries

By David J. Cross Mar 3 2022
Reviewed by Bethan Davies

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are regarded as one of the most important and popular forms of energy storage globally. Found in a vast array of devices ranging from cell phones, laptops and computer peripherals to electric vehicles (EVs) and aircraft, Li-ion battery technology plays a major role in powering the modern world.

ImagenImage Credit: Shutterstock.com/ ktsdesign

However, one of the drawbacks is that once dead and no longer able to generate a charging cycle, Li-ion batteries are notoriously hard to dispose of and vast numbers, into the billions, are now accumulating in waste due to the ubiquity of portable electronic devices and growing rate of EVs on the roads today.

Now, a team of researchers based at Princeton have made steps towards developing a sustainable and economical way to recycle dead Li-ion batteries and make new ones in their place. Moreover, the team has set up a company to take the innovative technology to scale.

What we see is that people would be willing to give us their dead batteries that are currently just sitting around. They receive back from us new pristine cathode materials for new batteries cheaper than they could manufacture on their own.

Chao Yan, Co-Founder and CEO of Princeton NuEnergy and a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The company set up by Yan and his colleagues, Xiaofang Yang, Yiguang Ju, was set up to offer second-life battery solutions and closed-loop Li-ion battery technology to deliver advanced sustainable energy and environmental solutions.

To efficiently recycle the Li-ion batteries, the team developed a process that turns the spent materials from the cathode – or the valuable part of a lithium-ion battery, which contain elements such as lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese – into new, reprocessed cathodes.

Pickup Truck Electrification Reduces More Greenhouse Gas
Mar 7 2022 Reviewed by Bethan Davies

Big automotive manufacturers are stepping up the production of electric trucks as a core strategy to decrease the greenhouse gas emissions of their vehicles.

Imagen

Light-duty vehicles, including SUVs sedans, and pickup trucks, are, at present, accountable for 58% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States transportation sector. In 2020, pickup trucks were accountable for 14% of light-duty vehicle sales in the United States, and the market share of both SUVs and pickups has increased in the last few years.

But what impact will pickup truck electrification really have on the decarbonization of the transportation sector?

Researchers from the University of Michigan and Ford Motor Co. answered this question in a new study and measured the savings in greenhouse gas emissions in relation to gasoline-powered pickup trucks. The study has been published in the March 1st online issue of the journal Environmental Research Letters.

During the study, scientists performed a cradle-to-grave assessment of the life cycle of pickup trucks and compared the effects of pickup truck electrification to those of SUV and sedan electrification.

Huge floating solar farm puts Thailand on track towards carbon neutrality

By Ben Anthony Horton with AFP • Updated: 11/03/2022 - 13:25

Imagen

In Thailand’s northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani, a reservoir has been transformed into a shimmering network of solar panels - capable of reducing the kingdom’s carbon emissions by 47,000 tonnes every year.

Touted as the "world's largest floating hydro-solar farm”, the Sirindhorn dam project is capable of creating solar power by day and hydropower by night.

The 720,000 square metre installation is the first of 15 farms Thailand plans to build as part of its ongoing commitment to reach carbon neutrality by the year 2050.

"This is the first and biggest project like this in the world," says Prasertsak Cherngchawano, Thailand’s deputy governor of electricity.

“There are 144,000 solar panels here. One panel is two square metres, and the whole farm is equivalent to 70 football fields."

Record-breaking hydrogen electrolyzer claims 95% efficiency
Loz Blain, March 16, 2022

A kilogram of hydrogen holds 39.4 kWh of energy, but typically costs around 52.5 kWh of energy to create via current commercial electrolyzers. Australian company Hysata says its new capillary-fed electrolyzer cell slashes that energy cost to 41.5 kWh, smashing efficiency records while also being cheaper to install and run. The company promises green hydrogen at around US$1.50 per kilogram within just a few years.

Efficiency is one of the big knocks against hydrogen as we move toward a clean energy future. It can store far more energy per weight or volume than batteries, and it supports fast refueling, making it useful in applications where batteries just don't have the energy density to compete. But where batteries are a highly efficient way to store and release energy, hydrogen seems to throw energy away at every step: electrolysis, storage and transport, conversion back into electricity through a fuel cell ... Heck, it even slowly leaks out of a metal tank.

If Hysata's new electrolyzer technology does what it says on the tin, the efficiency of the electrolysis stage will take a great leap forward, making much better use of precious clean energy. And by generating more hydrogen from a given energy supply, while reducing CAPEX and OPEX expenditures for operators, this equipment could indeed drive the price of green H2 down, perhaps to a point where it becomes competitive with dirty hydrogen, or even fossil fuels.

So how does it work? According to Hysata, it's all about bubbles. Bubbles in the electrolyte fluid are non-conducting, and they can stick to electrodes and mask them from contact with the fluids they need to touch to do their work. This is clearly a problem, since electrolyzers convert water into H2 and O2 gases.

The way Hysata tells it, early electrolyzers had both electrodes submerged in electrolyte, such that bubbles would form all around them. In the 70s, zero-gap electrolysis brought the anode and cathode directly in contact with the separator membrane, boosting efficiency by only allowing bubbles to form on one side of each electrode. More recently, polymer electrolyte membrane technology allowed the cathode side to run without electrolyte, boosting efficiency again by producing hydrogen gas without bubbling it through a liquid.

Imagen
Hysata's characterization of the evolution of electrolyzers, leading to the company's extraordinarily efficient new designHysata

Hysata's capillary-fed electrolyzer cell takes things to the next, and possibly ultimate, level. A reservoir at the bottom of the cell keeps the electrolyte out of contact with both the anode and the cathode until it's drawn up through a porous, hydrophilic, inter-electrode separator using capillary action. The electrolyte thus has direct contact with the electrodes, but only on one side, and both the hydrogen and oxygen gases are produced directly, without any bubbling to get in the way.

An Verstuyft, VRT NWS: nieuws, mier 09-30-2022

GE produces world's largest recyclable wind turbine blade
Nick Lavars, March 20, 2022

Imagen
The Zero Waste Blade Research (ZEBRA) Project has produced the world's largest recyclable wind turbine blade

Through its massive wind turbines and innovative offshore designs, GE continues sharpening its toolkit in a bid to built the future of sustainable energy, and a newly unveiled turbine blade shows how that can extend to the materials used. A consortium led by the company has manufactured the world's largest thermoplastic blade, designed to serve as full-scale example of a fully recyclable wind turbine blade.

Wind energy has become an important pillar in our fossil fuel-free future, but that doesn't mean it comes without environmental concerns of its own. The thermoset composites making up today's turbine blades cannot be recycled, and one University of Cambridge study suggests that there will be 43 million tonnes of blade waste around the world by 2050. The Zero Waste Blade Research (ZEBRA) Project is working on more sustainable materials in the form of thermoplastic composites.

The 62-meter (203-ft) prototype blade is made with Elium resin from materials company Arkema, which is a glass-fiber reinforced thermoplastic. Not only is the material 100 percent recyclable, it is said to deliver a similar level of performance to thermoset resins that are favored for their lightweight and durability.

Through a chemical recycling method, the material can be depolymerized and turned into a new virgin resin for re-use, acting as a proof-of-concept for a circular economy loop for the wind energy sector. Before that happens, in the coming weeks LM Wind Power will start full-scale structural testing to verify the blade's performance. It will then verify these advanced recycling methods later in the year, while also working on ways of recycling production waste.

“With this project we are addressing two crucial industry challenges," said John Korsgaard, Senior Director, Engineering Excellence, LM Wind Power. "On one hand, we are progressing on our Zero Waste Blades vision by preventing and recycling manufacturing waste. On the other, we are taking blade recyclability to a new level: the end-of-life thermoplastic composite blade material has high value in itself and can be readily utilized in other industries as material compounds but can also be depolymerized and the resin reused in the production of new blades."

Quantafuel announces Proof of Concept for its Skive chemical recycling plant
Press note- 28 march 2022

Imagen
Today, Quantafuel announces Proof of Concept (PoC) for its Skive chemical recycling plant after more than seven days of continuous operation at a level corresponding to an annual capacity of 16,000 tonnes of plastic waste infeed. “This represents a major milestone for chemical recycling, Quantafuel and our future growth,” says Quantafuel’s CEO Lars Rosenløv.

“Reaching this milestone is an important breakthrough for the company and for chemical recycling. It has taken us longer than anticipated, but systematic problem-solving by the entire organisation the past few months has made it possible. Following the upgrades made in the fourth quarter, we have known that our process and technology works. Now we have also managed to improve and balance the uptime and capacity,” says Quantafuel’s CEO Lars Rosenløv.

The last two weeks in January, Quantafuel processed 100 tonnes a week. Over the past seven days, we have converted 145 tonnes with the same two lines. This PoC level corresponds to 16,000 tonnes annually at plant level and previous runs have proven that the lines can run at an even higher level.

“We will continue our systematic approach removing bottlenecks and optimise operational parameters reaching for higher throughput and earnings. This is a normal exercise in the process industry,” Rosenløv continues.

We will revert with a guiding on Skive in due course.

Recently, we communicated that Quantafuel is ready to move forward with a next generation of larger-scale Plastic-to-Liquid plants. Today’s announcement reinforces this.

“We are well positioned to become a major, integrated recycling player and I look forward to continuing the journey. Today we celebrate a major achievement and thank all our employees, partners, contractors, suppliers and supporters,” Rosenløv adds.

The achieved PoC equals more than seven days of continuous production with an uptime above 90% at 16,000 tonnes of annual capacity, with an overall oil yield of 68%.

Quantafuel is a Norwegian technology-based recycling company with the purpose of ending wasteful and unsustainable handling of our planet's resources. Drawing on more than ten years of development, Quantafuel converts waste plastics back into low-carbon synthetic oil products replacing virgin oil products. Quantafuel aims to rapidly build up production capacity on a global scale and to have a meaningful impact on one of our time's most pressing environmental challenges.

Ultra-light liquid hydrogen tanks promise to make jet fuel obsolete
Loz Blain, New Atlas, April 21, 2022

HyPoint and GTL are developing ultra-lightweight cryogenic hydrogen tanks that the partnership promises will radiacally boost the range of clean hydrogen-electric aircraftGloyer-Taylor Laboratories

A revolutionary cryogenic tank design promises to radically boost the range of hydrogen-powered aircraft – to the point where clean, fuel-cell airliners could fly up to four times farther than comparable planes running on today's dirty jet fuel.

Weight is the enemy of all things aerospace – indeed, hydrogen's superior energy storage per weight is what makes it such an attractive alternative to lithium batteries in the aviation world. We've written before about HyPoint's turbo air-cooled fuel cell technology, but its key differentiator in the aviation market is its enormous power density compared with traditional fuel cells. For its high power output, it's extremely lightweight.

Now, it seems HyPoint has found a similarly-minded partner that's making similar claims on the fuel storage side. Tennessee company Gloyer-Taylor Laboratories (GTL) has been working for many years now on developing ultra-lightweight cryogenic tanks made from graphite fiber composites, among other materials.

Clean energy is buried at the bottom of abandoned oil wells
The US is spending millions to explore a surprising source of untapped power.

By Neel Dhaneshaneel.dhanesha@vox.com Apr 19, 2022, 5:00am EDT

In case you missed it, our planet is in trouble. The UN climate report from early April makes clear we’re on a path that will careen past the climate goals set in the Paris Agreement, and we need to cut carbon emissions — fast. But while solar and wind power are important (they are, after all, key parts of the Biden administration’s climate plan) they’re the kind of thing we’ve seen plenty of before, which means they’ll only get us so far. What we need, the UN report says, is new solutions. Which is why a pilot program recently detailed by the US Department of Energy (DOE) is particularly intriguing. If it works, it could help solve multiple problems at once, using an often-overlooked solution: geothermal energy.

Geothermal energy works on a simple premise: The Earth’s core is hot, and by drilling even just a few miles underground, we can tap into that practically unlimited heat source to generate energy for our homes and businesses without creating nearly as many of the greenhouse gas emissions that come from burning fossil fuels. However, drilling doesn’t come cheap — it accounts for half the cost of most geothermal energy projects — and requires specialized labor to map the subsurface, drill into the ground, and install the infrastructure needed to bring energy to the surface.

But the US, in the wake of an oil and gas boom, just so happens to have millions of oil and gas wells sitting abandoned across the country. And oil and gas wells, it turns out, happen to share many of the same characteristics as geothermal wells — namely that they are deep holes in the ground, with pipes that can bring fluids up to the surface. So, the DOE asks, why not repurpose them?

"Extremely fast-charging" battery hits 60 percent in under 6 minutes

With a view to shortening an electric vehicle's plug-in time, scientists have developed a battery that charges "extremely fast" Depositphotos

By rethinking a key battery component, scientists in China have come up with what's described as "extremely fast charging" technology that sees a lithium-ion battery hit 60 percent capacity in under six minutes. The breakthrough is billed as a significant one for the world of electric vehicles where recharge times lag far behind refueling times for conventional cars, and could make them a far appealing proposition on that front.

Led by researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China, the work focuses on one of the two electrodes in a lithium-ion battery, called the anode. This is of big interest to scientists in the field because redesigned anodes could offer great performance benefits, that include holding far more energy and charging up much more quickly.

One exciting possibility includes replacing the mix of graphite and copper with pure lithium metal, hailed as a "dream material" that could allow for up to 10 times the capacity of current devices. Other interesting examples include introducing experimental nanospheres into the anode to boost capacity, or doing away with the anode altogether to make for a smaller and cheaper battery.

The authors of this new study looked to improve on the standard anode by designing a new porous architecture with graphite particles of a certain size strewn throughout. The idea was to address the non-ordered nature of today's anodes, which feature spaces that mean the batteries don't lend themselves so well to fast charging, by using particle-level theoretical modeling to determine the optimal arrangement.

With the ideal distribution of different sized particles and spaces in the anode, the team also added copper nanowires and a copper coating and used heating and cooling treatments to form their novel component. As reported in TechXplore, this anode was incorporated into a standard lithium-ion battery and enabled it to be recharged to 60 percent in 5.6 minutes and to 80 percent in 11.4 minutes.

Described as an "extremely fast-charging lithium ion battery," the scientists see the technology as a promising stepping stone toward more desirable electric vehicles, pointing to the US Department of Energy's "Fast Charge Goal" of 10 mile (16 km) of travel per minute of charging.

The research was published in the journal Science Advances.

“There is a great demand for fuel in Sri Lanka. Our goal is to replace petrol with a more environmentally friendly solution.”

This was stated by Alfred Christy from the Department of Natural Sciences at UiA. He and his collaborator Souman Rudra from the Department of Engineering Sciences at UiA are uniting together with colleagues at the University of Jaffna to come up with a product that could be utilized in the engines of the common three-wheelers in Sri Lanka.
In Sri Lanka and neighboring countries, there are many motorized three-wheelers, also called rickshaws. From an environmental point of view, it is important to get the engines of these vehicles over to a more environmentally friendly fuel.
Alfred Christy, Department of Natural Sciences, University of Agder

Plant-Based Fuel
Renewable and more eco-friendly fuels are frequently known as biofuels and are made from biological materials.

The product that is being developed by the scientists is a plant-based oil mixture comprising castor oil and bioethanol. Bioethanol has been produced from corn or sugar cane, while castor oil is gained from the seeds of the castor plant and is extracted through cold pressing. The mixture has been referred to as “Casahol.”
What we see is that these two products together provide a lubricating oil with unique properties.
Alfred Christy, Department of Natural Sciences, University of Agder

Study collaborators at the University of Jaffna recently performed the first tests on a four-stroke motorcycle engine.
